When is the Best Time of Year to Sell My Franchise?

When is the Best Time of Year to Sell My Franchise?

Brokers get these questions all the time:

When is the best time to sell?

When am I likely to get the most attention from qualified buyers?

If I want to retire at the end of the year, when should I list my unit for sale?

Our answer is always “now.”

There is no seasonality to selling a business, although there might be some in your industry. We’ve written about this before. If you’re in the shipping business, for example, the holiday gift season will be your peak season. The same principle applies to the fitness industry around the first of the year as people are motivated to join a gym and get in shape.

That will affect your ability to be responsive to buyers.

Here’s what you should consider:

The timing of your sale is a personal decision. If your gut tells you that you don’t have another peak season in you, it’s probably right. Many owners ignore the signs of burnout until they’re overwhelmed. The business can suffer when the owner loses their passion for running and growing it, and declining revenue or profitability will affect the price a buyer is willing to pay for the company. You’ll want to exit when you still have gas in the tank and forward momentum.

Selling during peak season will be very stressful but may pay off in the end. Selling your business can feel like a full-time job. If you’re putting out fires every day or having to step in to supplement your staff, your response time to a buyer’s inquiries may slow down – or simply not happen. That’s a sure formula for having a deal fall apart. Having a clear idea of your bandwidth for the diligence process is essential to timing the sale. That’s when a business broker becomes an invaluable asset, keeping communication flowing between the two parties and ensuring the seller doesn’t miss deadlines or get overwhelmed by the details.

Buyers may also have a preference for timing. Some buyers prefer to acquire a company in the off-peak season so they have time to learn the business and make changes and improvements. Some, especially those who have experience in your industry, prefer to take over a company when it’s at its most profitable, so their cash flow gets a boost right away. That’s part of the process of selecting the right buyer at the right time for your opportunity.

Predicting the market, the economy, or other external factors is impossible. When you’re ready to get out of the business, it’s the right time to list. There will always be noise that might make you want to put off selling. Tariffs, interest rates, a declining economy – they all might affect the number of buyers for your business. But you can’t control them or possibly know what might be happening six months from now.

It may take months to find the right buyer and the right offer for your franchise. However, franchises typically sell faster than other types of businesses because demand for established franchise opportunities can be strong. Last year, we averaged 4.5 offers per business listing, and we’re tracking even better in 2026. The only way to determine the level of buyer interest in your unit is to put it on the market. Even in times of high interest rates and tight monetary policy, savvy buyers are making offers every day on businesses with strong brands, proven business models, and growth potential.

All of this is to say that the right time to list your business for sale is when it’s right for you. Click here to get a free and confidential opinion of value of your business in today’s market.
